2019 Rusty Mutt Viognier

The colour is a light straw with green / golden hues. The aroma is a complex blend of lime, orange peel, grassy herbs, tea leaves and quince. The palate has a lovely weight and mouthfeel. Herbs, spice and apple, with lime zest and clean acidity on the finish.

When choosing a white wine to produce from McLaren Vale, I looked at the varieties that grow well here and the corresponding region in France. Shiraz and Grenache are the stand out red varieties of McLaren Vale which also grow very well in the Rhone region of France. One of the most interesting whites from this area is Viognier (Condrieu appellation). As it turns out, Viognier is the 4th largest white variety by tonnes crushed in McLaren Vale so finding some was quite easy! I made the wine in a fresh aromatic style, completely un-oaked. It looks a bit like a Sauvignon Blanc on the nose and a Chardonnay on the palate.
