The name Rusty Mutt comes from owner & Winemaker Scott Heidrich's interest in Chinese philosophy and astrology. Scott was born in the year of the Dog with the metal element being the dominant element of that twelve year cycle. So the 'Metal dog' became 'Rusty Mutt'! With the support of some close, wine loving friends we began the Rusty Mutt dream with three barrels of McLaren Vale Shiraz, made at a friends small winery. Eventually we sold it, and made a bit more wine a few years later and the ball began to roll. After enjoying this very 'up close and personal' experience Scott decided not to ferment anything bigger than what can plunged by hand. Thus our batch sizes range from 1 - 5 tonnes in open fermenters.
The small batch nature of our wines require a lot more close contact during every stage of production. Every detail is important to ensure no mistakes are made and every barrel is the best it can be. There are no 'bucket blends' here to hide problems! With careful selection of the grapes from different parts of McLaren Vale, coupled with the detailed and gentle wine making techniques, Scott's personality most definitely shows though in all Rusty Mutt wines.
Scott is currently the Winemaker for a very reputable winery in McLaren Vale and has been involved in producing several award winning wines . Rusty Mutt debuted in the 2014 James Halliday Wine Companion as a 5 star winery with two 94 point reviews!
Because our wines are crafted with such affection and attention to the finer details, you won’t find then crammed on the shelves of any ol’ discount wine shop. That’s why Rusty Mutt wines are only available to those who share our passion for a glass of the finest.
